About this map
Every marker is an automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera tagged in
OpenStreetMap with man_made=surveillance and
surveillance:type=ALPR. Marker color indicates the vendor
inferred from OSM's manufacturer tag, where a contributor has
recorded one — most cameras currently show as unknown vendor simply because that detail
hasn't been tagged yet, not because the hardware can't be identified. Click a marker for
vendor, camera type, and the direction it faces, if recorded.
This map is rendered on a canvas, which has real limits for screen-reader users — see our accessibility statement for details. The same underlying data is also published as plain, screen-reader-accessible HTML on the camera directory, organized by state.
Camera location data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and licensed under the Open Database License, refreshed on FlockScanner's nightly sync cadence. It is not independently field-verified — see methodology for how the pipeline works, and report a camera if you spot something missing or out of date.
Why this map exists
Automated license plate readers have spread quickly across the United States over the past several years, but no single government agency publishes a comprehensive, public list of where they've been installed. Volunteers on OpenStreetMap have been closing that gap the same way OSM maps anything else — one confirmed observation at a time, using an open tagging scheme anyone can verify or correct. FlockScanner doesn't add to that dataset; it reads the same open data everyone else can read and turns it into a map and a search-indexable directory, refreshed automatically every night rather than requiring a person to manually update a spreadsheet.
Launch scope is the United States only. Coverage will always be incomplete — it reflects how many cameras OpenStreetMap contributors have found and tagged in a given area, not the true number installed, so a sparse-looking region may simply be under-mapped rather than camera-free.
