Why are cities cancelling Flock cameras?
The most commonly reported reason is data access: cities discovering that plate data collected locally was searchable by federal agencies or out-of-state departments through Flock's opt-in national lookup network, which many councils say they never agreed to. Other reported drivers are audits finding officer misuse, a wrongful stop or arrest traced to the system, contract cost at renewal time, and organised public opposition.
Do the cameras come down when a city cancels its Flock contract?
Not immediately, and sometimes not for months. Reporting on cancellations repeatedly notes that remaining lease terms, notice periods, and whether the hardware is city-owned or Flock-owned all affect how quickly cameras are physically removed after a council vote. That lag is also why a camera can still appear on a crowdsourced map after the contract behind it has ended.
