Flock camera privacy concerns

The privacy objection to ALPR is not usually that a camera photographed one car once. It is that thousands of cameras photographing every car, all the time, and retaining the results, add up to a searchable record of where people go. This page tracks 59 stories on that debate.

Each item links to the outlet that reported it. For the underlying legal argument, see FlockScanner's Fourth Amendment explainer.

Common questions

What are the privacy concerns with Flock cameras?

Four recur across reporting. Retention: plate reads are kept for a set period — Flock has moved to a 7-day default in some configurations, but agency policies vary widely. Aggregation: individually trivial reads combine into a detailed travel history. Access: opt-in national lookup networks mean data collected by one town can be searched by agencies elsewhere, including federal ones. And consent: nobody driving past a camera is asked. FlockScanner tracks 59 stories on these concerns.

How long is Flock camera data kept?

It varies by agency and by contract rather than being a single national figure. Flock Safety has publicised a 7-day default retention setting, but individual agencies have historically set retention anywhere from a few days to a year or more, and some ALPR systems generally have retained data far longer. The retention period that applies to you is set by whichever agency operates the camera, and is usually discoverable through a public-records request.
